Pendlestone Bond, London (UK)

“The journey through the meticulous craftsmanship of the red stock facade sets the stage for the entrance into the home, creating an external lobby that warmly welcomes you into a world of modern living.”

Introduction

Nestled within the vibrant Walthamstow, Waltham Forest, the task at hand was to craft two homes for two families in the existing brownfield yard. These homes, each comprising two bedrooms with attached amenity spaces, posed a unique challenge due to the unconventional nature of the plot, set back from the street. Our design, while breaking away from the existing pattern, harmonises seamlessly with the local streetscape.

Pendlestone curates and defines a certain lifestyle with high-design courtyards and amenity spaces. Bespoke uses of special bricks allows an infill development to express grandeur and a sense of quality.

Approach

A symphony of well-planned external barriers and contemporary living spaces addressed the site’s constraints with a focus on quality design. Employing brick bonding techniques and timber finishes, we highlighted a direct narrative of traditional materiality, celebrating the richness of local brick stock. The significance of craftsmanship echoed through refined connections, showcasing the architectural features of bay windows and pitched roofs with modern, sustainable building methods. Timber windows and red bricks defined the architectural spirit, while the white render crafted a distinctive external lobby form. In a high PTAL area where secluded gardens are a rarity, our design considered the rooftop garden as a serene retreat. The butterfly roof design provided complete seclusion, ensuring privacy and tranquillity. The stairway entrance doubled as a winter garden, where planters created a tranquil Eden within the framed views.

Detail

The stacked house form and the constraints of the back land necessitated solutions that defied typical street typology. A search for space led us to innovate, extending into the roofscape. The rooftop, while offering additional amenity space, was seamlessly integrated within the pitches of the roof, a hidden gem within the urban landscape.
