Pham Bateau, Mekong River (Vietnam)

The aim of this project was to create a vessel that would breathe and transform along the Nine Dragons(rivers).

Introduction

An innovative project took us to Vietnam’s fascinating rivers where we transformed traditional Vietnamese longboats into engaging and dual purpose vacation homes.  The sole aim of this project was to create a vessel that would breathe and transform along the Nine Dragons(rivers), highlighting the transparency of its programming.  The client’s goal was to use this as a holiday home that allows flexibility in location and usage.

Approach

In designing the boat, we took into account its original usage as a goods vessel  that we had to develop in stages to become a vessel for vacations for a family.  The existing structure has so much beauty which we did not want to interrupt and if anything it was about highlighting its nature.  We split the usage across the three floors of the vessel due to its depth allowing for two floors and a sun roof that has potential for living activities.  The design was about being able to use all inches of the vessel so that the interaction with the rivers was as strong as possible, while creating comfortable usage.

Implementation

The construction had to be produced within stages with local craftsmanship to allow the local authorities to sign off on each stage of the vision.

The transportation vessel we used for the refurbishment, to create a holiday home. The pre-usage was to transport of fruits and vegetables.
